Darlinghurst - Wings and Tins

What better way to celebrate the end of exams than to clink chicken wings with your brethren. That's why we headed to Wings and Tins, a cosy, hidden joint specialising in wings and beers.

To the untrained eye it is incredibly difficult to spot Wings and Tins. It's located in a dark brooding alleyway where you have to avoid freezing like deer caught in headlights as cars attempt to narrowly squeeze through the space of two people's arms length. The bar doesn't have a store front, and if you see an inviting little Italian restaurant, you've gone too far. Step back a few paces. Yes, that open blue door where you glanced a toilet room on the inside- if you go up the stairs, you'll see a door spray painted with the hieroglyphic "W+T"- you've made it.

Walking in, there is immediately a very warm inviting mood. The space seems like a converted terrace house, with a few booth tables, single tables and a pleasant balcony area lit with small lights. The walls are bedecked with a flurry of art pieces, modified with cartoon speech bubbles to praise the establishment. When we arrived, loud 80s rock music was blasting from somewhere (click here and here to experience it!).

We ordered The Triple Sauce buffalo wings and the Salt and Pepper dry rub wings. Both came with an interesting blue cheese dip I've never tried before, and even more intriguing- celery/carrot sticks and coleslaw!

The Triple Sauce buffalo wings, $14 (top) and Salt and Pepper dry rub wings, $12 (bottom).

The Triple Sauce buffalo wings were delectably saucy on the outside yet managed to stay crispy on the inside, and the chicken was oh-so tender. The sauce was a great balance of sweet and spicy, the heat starting out low but ramping up with every bite. The parmesan definitely adds another dimension to it.

The blue cheese sauce is interesting- if you don't like blue cheese, then strap in cause you're in for a liquidy, creamy blue cheese sauce and you're going to enjoy it. The blue cheese-ness also adds another layer of flavour to the wings. I'd say that blue cheese sauce is truffle-infused cheese dip's underrated cousin; less expensive but same intense flavour.

The Salt and Pepper wings attracted us with the promise as "extra crispy wings", and it definitely delivered as that batter made a hefty cronch. I feel like the blue cheese dip complemented this better. The coleslaw was a really nice side that complimented the heavy, fatty, oiliness of the wings! I'm personally not a coleslaw fan, having disliked KFC and Woolies coleslaw. But this coleslaw wasn't heavy on the salad cream, and provided an excellent cushioning to the heat of the Triple Sauce wings.

Another worthy note: each table had a can full of disposable towelettes and a huge roll of kitchen paper!!! An excellent touch. Definitely appreciated that.

We are definitely coming back to try the other wings, and to sample their array of fries. This place would be excellent for a chill gathering with close friends (just make sure to book ahead as there's limited space!). We noticed a particularly interesting point on the menu; add $4 to do a "Russian Roulette" in which one wing is their T Bones Doom Juice (laced with Carolina Reaper chilli!). Come with your friends or come with your enemies!
